Hello everybody,
Sorry I did not get out an email the past week. I have just been too busy. There were a couple of our runners in High River for the Kilted Run last week. Others ran around town and had breakfast together afterwards. We had about 12 runners at Smitty's for breakfast last week.
Today there were 12 runners at the Rec Center. We did the Vet loop and some went through town. It looked really cold this morning, Larry was running past my home in full winter gear, but at 09:00AM the temperature was reasonable.
The Rockies looked beautiful with snow covered mountain tops. I think coming winter will be very cold and we will get even more snow than last winter. Now you know I was not born here, so maybe I am talking nonsense.? I do not think so, I never do. However do not judge me until after winter, let’s say May 2008.
Read this email carefully, today all items below are important as they are all new.
1. Sheep River Road Race 2007
The race on September 03 was a great success. We had about 30 entries less than last year, but that happens. The organization was superb, Wayne and his team did a great job. Many runners and spectators told us they were really happy with how the race and the presentation of the awards in Okotoks is organised. For instance Barry Griffith, who is a former President of the Calgary Road Runners, personally told me that the SRRR is the best organised small event in the Calgary area. Barry, who is a runner himself, came to Okotoks only because he wanted to be part of it, he could not race because he was injured. I think this says enough about our race and our friendship with the Calgary Road Runners.
Therefore we want to thank Wayne Gaudet and his team, all volunteers and marshalls, all sponsors, the RCMP, the EMS, the Town of Okotoks and everybody who was involved in organizing the race. Thank you all for your continuous support. If I missed somebody, sorry but realize that you also belong to the group we want to thank.
2. Barbeque at Wayne's place
The barbeque at Wayne's place on Monday afternoon after the SRRR was a success as always. On behalf of all of us, Wayne thank you very much for your hospitality, drinks and food. Also thank you to Wayne Gaudet for supplying the burgers and sausages.
There is another Wayne we do not want to forget. Every year Wayne Gaudet takes care of the burgers. Thanks very much Wayne, it is greatly appreciated.
People always say that you get to know your fellow runners much better at a social gathering. Well it pleased me to see that most runners also get along very well at a barbeque. I think there is a team spirit and friendship in our group that we all appreciate. I am always looking forward to the breakfasts, parties and barbeques and I know a lot of you do too. The Big Rock Runners Club is more than only running, it’s a way to have fun together no matter what we do.
During the barbeque we have given Wayne Wiebe and Kathleen (you too Richard) a gift certificate for dinner at a local restaurant. This was to thank both for the yearly barbeque and breakfast. Wayne, Kathleen and Richard want to thank you all for this gift, they really appreciate the thoughts behind it.
3. Master Swimming Club
As you know Wayne, Barb, Tom and myself have been lane swimming last winter in the new pool at the Rec Center. The same group will be swimming again coming winter on every Monday and Wednesday evening from 08:00-09:00PM. We have enjoyed it very much and found it to be a good exercise besides our running.
Start will be on October 1st and it will continue until June 2008. The costs will be ca. $200.00 for the whole period. This is a bargain if you compare it to the normal rates.
There is a meeting coming Wednesday at the Rec Center, which either Wayne or myself will attend. If there is anybody of you that wants to join us, send me an email no later than Tuesday and we will ask if there are free spots available. After that you will have to take care of your own entry.
4. Goat Creek Trail
I received an email from Shelley about this trail read this copy.
Shelly wrote:
"Chuck and I ran the Goat Creek Trail last week and we would like to organize a club run of this trail. We are looking at either the 14th or the 24th of October. We would meet at Tim Horton's in Okotoks to split into 2 groups. My group (the slower runners) would start on the Canmore end and the faster group would start on the Banff end.
At the end of the run we would drive each other’s vehicles and meet for lunch somewhere TBA."
If you are interested in running the Goat Creek Trail then send an email to Shelly or myself.
5. Annual General Meeting
The AGM this year will be on October 26 at the Beach House of Crystal Ridge. As usual we will do our run , eat pizza and try to talk sense.
Keep this date free for this meeting, important things are going to be discussed.
If there are members that would prefer another date, then let me know and we will see if we have to change the date.
6. Executive Committee
As you all know Anita has left Okotoks and is trying her luck, with Geoff, in Denver. This means that we will need a new Secretary. We we need somebody of you to take over. If you want to do it or know somebody that might be interested let me know.
Secondly I will also be stepping down as your President. Knowing that all of you need guidance from a higher authority I am asking the new President to step forward. If you are interested let me know and we can make this transition as smooth as possible.
Thirdly this also means that I will stop with my weekly emails and somebody will have to take that over. let me know if your PC can handle this.
None of these 3 "jobs" takes a lot of time and it will be greatly appreciated by everyone as I have noticed in the previous years. Our Society Bylaws state that the President, Treasurer and Secretary must be replaced after 3 years. I have been President since November 2003, which is 4 years. (My calculator tells me that 2007-2003=4) This is long enough and I think the Club can use somebody with different thoughts and new ideas. Fresh blood in the Committee will be positive for all our activities and prevents all of us from falling asleep.
Think about it and let me know.
This was all for this week, see you Saturday.
Jos
Hello everybody,
Sorry I did not send out an email last week, my PC was giving me trouble again. Hope the problem is fixed now. I think we were with 12 runners at the Rec Center. We did some short runs, through Crystal Ridge and the river loop made us feel happy already. It was way too hot to get tired anyway.
It was good to see our new Okotokian Gary Glover again. As you may know he and Donna finally took the step and moved to Okotoks. Gary ran out of friends in High River and is trying to built up a friendship with us now. Let’s all go and visit Gary in his new home, he told me there will always be coffee and even sometimes some alcoholic drinks as well. Gary now you have no excuse anymore (like "Donna goes to Mexico next week and I cannot leave her alone") for not showing up on Saturday mornings. Gary and Donna welcome in Okotoks, we hope you will enjoy live in this great town with very nice people.
Coming weeks we will have a couple of important events, so pay attention.
1. Farewell party for Anita and Geoff Melkjorsen
This past week we heard that Anita and Geoff are leaving Okotoks and moving to Denver in the USA. Geoff got a promotion at work and has to move over there. They have bought a mansion in one of the suburbs of Denver and will be leaving Okotoks within 3 weeks.
We will surely miss them, and thought we should have a big party for them so they will always remember us!
Barb has invited us all for this party at her house on Saturday, August 11, from 5-8PM. Let’s all go, this is a once in a life time chance to say adieu to Anita & Geoff..................
Barb lives just south of town, she will send you all an email and tell you how to get there.
Barb will have burgers and sausages on the barbeque and some drinks. If you all can bring a salad or dessert that would be great, but please let Barb know ahead of time what you are bringing so we don't have too much food. If you think you need special drinks, bring your own as well.
So, if you would like to come and bid adieu to Anita and Geoff please email Barb so she has an idea on the numbers.
Phone: 995-1300 Email: besveld@telus.net
By the way, Geoff and Anita, you do not have to bring anything but your usual smile.
2. Sheep River Road Race 2007
There will be a meeting at Wayne's house soon. He will let you all know when.
We need more door prizes for the race. The organizers are asking all members to bring in door prizes. We should all be able to do that. You all have your own relations network. Talk to them and bring your door prizes to Chuck Holmstrom. In fact we could say that the entry fee for all our members is $35.00 + minimum 1 door price.
3. Death Race in Grand Cache
Next weekend Gary and Wayne will be running the Death Race, which is 125km up and down hill. More up than down however. We know they like to torture their bodies by running these long distances without complaining. Wayne and Gary good luck out there and come home safe.
4. Kelowna (Half) Marathon
This will take place on October 14, same day as Victoria. Barb and Brita intend to run the Half and I will be running the Marathon and try to qualify for Boston.
We could use some more runners out there, I certainly can use somebody who runs with me and pushes me during my marathon. So whoever wants to join us, sign up. There is still time to get in shape.
This is all for this week, see you on Saturday.
Jos.
Hello everybody,
There were 12 runners at the Rec Center. We did the loop along the river. It was hot, but better than -40 degrees. It is Summer time, so there is not much news. We missed the July breakfast because of the Triathlon last week, so we wanted to catch up. We were lucky there was a free breakfast at the Crystal Ridge Beach House. Of 7 us walked up there and had some good pancakes and sausages. Lets go to the important stuff.
1. Sheep River Road Race 2007.
The new entry form is posted on our site, so sign up and let all your neighbours, friends and family know it is time to sign up too and start training.

2. Edmonton Ultra Race
This is a new race part of the Alberta Ultra series. We had 3 runners and here are the results.
Mary Bell did the 50k, finished as # 12 out of 28 overall and as # 1 in her category.
Corinne Austerman did the 80k, finished as # 4 out of 7 overall and as # 1 in her category.
Wayne Gaudet did the 100k, finished as # 3 out of 10 overall and as # 3 in his category.
Congratulations to all 3 of you. Great achievement in the heat of the day.
This was all for this week.
Jos.
Hello everybody,
I do not know if there was anybody at the Rec Center yesterday because we were all at the Crystal Ridge Beach House for the Foothills Charity Triathlon. Hope you had a good run if you did go out.
Let’s talk about the things that kept us busy this weekend.
1. Foothills Charity Triathlon July 07, 2007
Thanks for all of you that helped out with this run. This was the second Triathlon with 180 competitors. Last year they had 150 entries, so it looks like people get more interested in this event.
It was very well organized by Garth Misura and his team and no doubt they will have made some money to send to the kids in Ethiopia.
Again thanks and hope to see you again for this next year.
Richard took care of the kids run. He told me there were quite a lot of kids running his loop at the Morris Gibson school. As he says, kids are always happy when you organize something for them. And so they were.
2. Calgary Stampede Half & Full Marathon.
This morning 9 members of us were running in Calgary. Gloria Boucher, Wayne Gaudet, Norm Brennand, Larry Swanson and Tom Hughes did the Marathon. Norma Dawson did the 10km and Britta Gimblett, Berry Urban and Jos Brinkhof did the Half Marathon. We also saw our old members Robin Grant and Peter Cruttenden running the Half Marathon.
Yes, Robin is back in the City until the first week of August. Then he goes back home. For your information, Robin told me that back home his family was very unlucky this week. In the area where he lives in New Zealand, statistics show that there will be about 6 tornados in 10 years. Well this week 10 tornados hit the coast in one day. One of them hit Robins house and took of the roof of his garage and part of his home. He almost had to go back, but they managed to put a tarp on the roof. His wife and daughters can still live in the home, Robin will have to do some work when he comes home in August.
Robin told me he will probably be running with us on Saturday July 21. If you want to meet him, then be there.
The total number of runners this year was 6000. Here are the unofficially result from today.
10Km:
Norma Dawson ran 1:02:57, finished as # 908 overall and # 3 out of 5 in her category. Congratulations with your 3th place Norma.
Half Marathon:
Britta Gimblett ran 2:37:57, finished as # 1795 overall and # 135 out of 159 in her category. This was Britta's first Half Marathon, she had a great run.
Berry Urban ran 2:11:35, finished as # 1242 overall and # 76 out of 162 in her category. This was Berry's first Half Marathon in Canada. Good job Berry.
Jos Brinkhof ran 1:45:16, finished as # 263 overall and # 27 out of 44 in his category.
Peter Cruttenden ran 1:26:12, finished as # 33 overall and # 2 out of 4 in his category. Note: his category result cannot be correct.
Robin Grant ran 1:21:07, finished as # 19 overall and # 1 out of 5 in his category. Robin congratulations with your category victory.
Marathon:
Gloria Boucher ran 3:33:43, finished as # 105 overall and # 4 out of 33 in her category. Gloria qualified for the Boston Marathon, congratulations.
Norm Brennand ran 4:35:24, finished as # 535 overall and # 44 out of 54 in his category. Norm qualifired for the Cayley Marathon in 2008. Good job Norm.
Larry Swanson ran 3:41:10, finished as # 141 overall and # 23 out of 86 in his category.
Tom Hughes ran 3:21:22, finished as # 51 overall and # 9 out of 86 in his category. Tom qualified for the Boston Marathon, congratulations to you too.
Wayne Gaudet ran 3:17:29, finished as # 42 overall and # 1 out of 54 in his category. Congratulations with your category victory Wayne and your qualification for the Boston Marathon as well. It looks like Wayne does not need any special training to do these short distances, next week he is going for another 100km in Edmonton. Congratulations Wayne and good luck next week.
As I said before, the results are unofficially, it looks that there are some mistake in the category results. Except for Wayne and Robin, they did win their category and Norma did finish as # 3 in her category.
The Big Rock Runners had a very successful day at the Calgary event, so keep training and next year you can be the one that outruns them all.
